August 25, 2009 - Nine seasoned hikers trekked 22 miles to the summit and back of Mt. Whitney.
For the past seven years, Rowbotham & Company has sponsored and organized a Mt. Whitney challenge hike. This year, for the first time, all hikers made it to the summit and back in one day. Mt. Whitney is part of the Eastern Sierra Nevada Range in Southern California and at 14,496 feet, (4,421 meters) is the highest peak in the lower 48 states. The hike has an altitude change of over 7,000 ft in each direction and usually takes 10 - 15 hours to complete depending on one's level of fitness and training
The event was used to raise funds for (NCEFT), the National Center for Equine Facilitated Therapy, which provides rehabilitation and therapy services through the use of horse riding. NCEFT is a nonprofit organization that provides these services to children and to military veterans suffering from head trauma injuries sustained while on active duty. Funds were also raised for providing supplemental education services to schools in lower income districts in the Bay Area.
The 2009 Team members were: Jennifer Ames, David Foster, Aubrey Helms, Zara Rowbotham, Michael Strohecker, David Taub, Nick Villalobos, Rick Walker and Brian Rowbotham. David Taub travelled the furthest distance, flying in from New York for the event.
Co-sponsors included Keen Footwear., headquartered in Oregon, and the Venture Capital Private Equity group in Palo Alto. We wish to thank Rory Fuerst of Keen Footwear and Gloria Guenther of the VCPE for their support.
